Help Pass HR 3648 – Gluten in Medicine Disclosure Act

Post Archived by Diane on 1/23/2017.

Did you know that some probiotics contain gluten? Because celiac disease centers are concerned about gluten being labeled in over- the-counter drugs as well as prescription medications, Ohio Representative Tim Ryan (District 13) and
Nita-Lowey[1]
Nita Lowey (New York, District 17) introduced House Resolution HR3648, which requires that gluten  be easily identified in pharmaceutical products.

The Celiac Disease Foundation has made it easy for you to support this Bill and have your voice heard. They have a sample “cut and paste” patient letter that can be sent to your representative. Go to and simply identify your representative by zip code to send an email. You can also write the content yourself. Either way, let Congress know we want medications labeled if they contain gluten so our medications help–not hurt– celiac patients!

  1. Laurie,
Thank you and everyone involved with bringing to the forefront. This is well overdue for all of us. We just want to know what is safe to consumer, so we can make the choice. We suffer with the consequences daily.
I just sent my letters in. Are you able to provide an updated status as this moves to and through Congress? Too many of us want to know.
    Thanks again,
    Marcia

    1. Marcia,
There is a wonderful website that tracks bills for us, and the good news is– you can follow the bill’s progress in your own email account. Simply go to https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/114/hr3648 and sign up to get updates.
The bill was just proposed and will take time. What is needed more than anything else is letters to our congress people and senators to turn this into a reality! So THANK YOU so much for writing! I hope everyone who reads this will take action too!

  2. Thank you for posting this, Laurie! I, too, hope everyone who comments will forward this on, and contact your representative to push this bill through. It is so vital that those of us with celiac disease and with food allergies not be inadvertently doing harm to ourselves instead of good by taking the medications we are prescribed.

Gluten Dude also wrote on this recently, and in his article there is an easy search for your representative, and another simple but impactful form letter:

Those of you eager to see this bill passed, please write and make your voices heard!

  3. Thank you for including this on our site, Laurie. CDF has made it so EASY to contact one’s own representative. It only takes a few minutes! I am hoping everyone who has written here has or will take a moment to write directly to their representative since it is unlikely he/she will visit our site to read the many thoughtful comments. 🙂

  4. this is a serious issue and should not be taking lighlty. I have a son who has major allergies and that is one of them and it is almost in everything. Please help us

  5. I have had so many times where I thought the food was safe for me and ended up getting very sick. Sure would be wonderful to get this bill passed since there are more and more people being diagnosed with Celiac disease or Gluten sensitivity. Just time for this to be fixed. Please help all of us from infants to adults not to have to worry about what we are eating. Its hard enough not being able to eat regular foods instead of 10 minutes in the stores we have to spend 45 minutes. Instead of ordering a dinner in a restaurant we have to explain what we can’t have hoping the chef knows what they are doing and the waitress not letting our plate touch another plate with Gluten on it. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  6. All allergens should be included, such as gluten, wheat, dairy, casein, tree nuts, peanuts, egg, soy, corn and so on. Doesn’t really help those of us avoiding more than gluten! Most people I know that have to avoid gluten, have other food allergies and sensitivities. I have 8 foods I need to avoid!

  7. I think this is a great idea. My son has celiacs disease and it should be marked on the labels if it’s got gluten in it , due to there’s way to many drugs out there for a pharmacist to know what’s in everything.

  8. It would be a great help to those of us who suffer from gluten issues including Celiac’s to not have to fear and worry that something we purchase contains gluten. I can’t tell you just how painful it is for us to eat something that does not list a gluten item on the ingredients then to get that searing stomach ache that tells you that you’ve just consumed something that while you thought was safe actually wasn’t. We shouldn’t have to live in fear of getting glutenized by careless individuals when we are trying so very hard to be careful.

  9. Please help us help ourselves. We need this knowledge to be healthy. Being healthy means we can work and take care of our families.
