Merwin’s Wharf

1785 Merwin Ave, Cleveland, Ohio 44113
Myself, my husband and another friend ate lunch here Sept. 28. As it was a nice day we ate outside, with a lovely river view, rose bushes in bloom yet and very pleasant overall. I was presented with a laminated gluten-free menu that contained a nice selection. Most sandwiches were available gluten-free with lettuce replacing the usual bun, which was fine. Service was very good and my meal (Cuban type sandwich but on lettuce with green beans on the side) was tasty and filling. Prices were a bit on the high side, but the value was well worth it. Afterwards we strolled the waterfront and examined the information signs detailing the area’s history. A pleasant time and I’m sure we will return. FYI In addition to a fire pit area outside, there is also a huge outdoor fireplace with comfortable seating. I can imagine that evenings here are fabulous.

Strip Steakhouse

3684 Detroit Rd
Avon, OH 44011

Anne Writes:

My husband and I dined at this restaurant July 25th to celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary. We were very pleasantly impressed with the atmosphere (restored Evers Barn 1851 in historic Olde Avon Village), menu selections, serving sizes and service.

They have an extensive (laminated!) gluten-free menu. I chose almond prawns appetizer, lobster bisque, 6 oz. steak filet with Béarnaise sauce, garlic buttered broccoli, scalloped potatoes and crème brulee for dessert. My husband had a huge steak and house pierogis. The side dishes come family style and, although they are presented for 2 servings, they could easily serve 3 to 4.

This restaurant is famous for its meats – all are of the highest quality and are aged 21 days in a vacuum seal. They were perfectly cooked and extremely tender and juicy. Our server could not have been nicer nor more efficient. We must have spent about 2 hours there slowly dining and enjoying ourselves.

Lastly, all this comes at a price (but we had a $150 gift certificate to use, so we were splurging). Even so, we will likely go back there again, perhaps for a special occasion, as the food was scrumptious and we truly enjoyed our evening (especially the gluten-free ordering ease!).

Starbucks has introduced a Gluten-Free Smoked Canadian Bacon & Egg hot breakfast sandwich.

From Starbucks’ website:

At last, a breakfast sandwich for our gluten-free friends. Tasty cherrywood-smoked Canadian bacon, an egg patty and reduced-fat white cheddar on a gluten free roll. It’s all prepared in a certified gluten-free environment and sealed for your safety. We then warm and serve it in its own oven-safe parchment bag to avoid any cross-contamination.

Starbucks has been increasing the number of gluten free offerings. Since the introduction of the Marshmallow Dream Bar Starbucks has been adding additional certified gluten free packaged snacks. You can find a range of chips, cookies, jerkies, yogurt and bananas. But it is only now that you can get a sandwich.

The GF roll stood up well to the heating and eating without crumbling, even having a slight chew. The filling is comfort food: soft and a bit salty.

The Starbucks workers at one location opened the package before heating. Do make sure that the item you receive has remained sealed in its package.

It’s nice to know I can find a meal while traveling thanks to the ubiquity of Starbucks.

As always, Starbucks says:

We cannot guarantee that any of our products are free from allergens (including dairy, eggs, soy, tree nuts, wheat and others) as we use shared equipment to store, prepare and serve them.

I’ve recently been to BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse in Orlando, Florida and closer to home in Mentor and North Olmsted.

At each visit I had a tasty meal and can highly recommend the Kale And Roasted Brussels Sprouts Salad and Fire-Roasted Barbacoa Chicken from the gluten free menu.

I was disappointed with the Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Pizookie®: Fresh-baked chocolate chip cookie with rich vanilla bean ice cream. Sounds great. But the serving I received was underbaked mush with a mediocre vanilla ice cream. Still, points for having this item on the menu.

The GF menu also has a GF pizza, entrees and sides. While the main menu says they have GF buns for burgers, burgers are not listed on the GF menu.

Dining Out G-F in NEO

I cook at home every day so it’s pretty amazing how much dining out I did over the past eight weeks.  Happily most of my experiences have resulted in great meals.  There were some little glitches along the way – mostly due to my personal dining quirks but on the whole I, and the rest of my party, was pleased.

Pura Vida – Euclid Ave. Downtown CLE

Pura Vida is a frequent ‘go to’ place when our family is in town as it provides a nice selection of options covering all dietary issues.  Our group typically includes traditional diners, gluten-free diners, vegetarian, and/or vegan – sometimes these overlap.  We like the creative menu at Pura Vida, the range of options, their care of preparation, the bar and wine menu and the dessert options.  Sadly they no longer offer a g-f beer option.  For this dining experience I enjoyed the Butternut Squash Bisque, the Simple Salad and the Braised Beef Short Rib.  Our table shared Brussels Sprouts and Fingerling Potatoes both g-f options.  To finish I had the house made marshmallow gelato !

Harvest Kitchen – Solon

There are a multitude g-f options to choose from on the ‘Winter’ Harvest Kitchen Menu. Options change with season so there is always something new and appealing being offered.  This winter I have enjoyed sharing with my table mates the Artisinal Cheese Platter (bring your own crackers), Oysters, Kale Salad, and the Hot Peppers.  My entree selections have included the Burger (minus the bun), Hangar Steak and the Grilled Rain Crow Ranch Pork Chop.  With these dishes the diner chooses two sides among the many offerings including roasted carrots or asparagus, brussels sprouts, cheddar grits, and spaghetti squash.  On one of the nights we dined the special was sauteed rapini, a favorite!

It is important to note that the kitchen preparation is traditional – not fully g-f so please be your own advocate and discuss your needs with your server.  My experience has been positive in their attention to detail.

Barroco Grill – Lakewood

This was our first time dining at Barroco.  One of our house guests found Barroco after an on-line search for Arepas.  After a call to the restaurant confirmed that gluten-free options are available we headed over to do a test run on the menu.  We were not disappointed.  Our choices included guacamole, a vegetarian version of the cheese dip, Arepas Mexicana, Arepas Burger, Vegetable filled Arepa, savory plantains and sweet plantains, yucca fries, and really great margaritas.  If I remember correctly they do not offer a true gluten-free beer on the menu.  The restaurant is pretty tiny but the back patio is enclosed and heated and we were comfortable.  The guitarist playing background music added to the festive atmosphere without being overwhelming to conversation.

Anatolia Cafe – Cleveland Hts.

Before this past December my last visit to Anatolia was about 2011.  At the time I was struggling to eat in restaurants because of my g-f requirement and while I was able to cobble together a meal at Anatolia it was not very g-f friendly or knowledgeable.  All that has changed in the past 6 years.  Anatolia was recommended to me recently by someone who was dining there, saw a the notations on the menu of g-f options and thought about my needs.  To start our party of four shared hummus, bean salad, stuffed grape leaves and olives with feta cheese.  Entrees included Lamb Adana, Stuffed Eggplant, Okra and Lamb, Stuffed Cabbage, Vegetarian Stew and Falafel.  Rice was served on the side to accompany my g-f tastings.  The consensus around the table was that each dish was wonderful.   Our server was knowledgeable and attentive.  While everyone enjoyed their cocktails I had to be satisfied with my club soda and lime since there is no g-f beer option on the menu.  The next time I dine there however I will ask them to allow me to cross the street and bring some beer from The Wine Spot.  If that is not an option, we’ll get our dinners to go and eat them at The Wine Spot so I can have my Bard’s with dinner.

The Fairmount – Cleveland Hts.

The cold Bard’s (g-f) beer offered at The Fairmount is just one of the many reasons to dine there if you have g-f dietary needs where one of those needs includes beer!  The staff is welcoming, helpful, and super friendly.  The food is amazing!  Some of my favorite menu items to start include the cast iron brussels sprouts, cheese and meat platters (bring your crackers or order an accompanying g-f flat bread), numerous options for salads (add a protein).  For entrees I like the flatiron steak (no frites – no dedicated fryer), grilled lamb lollipops, The Fairmount’s amazing burger (no bun – lettuce wrap available), tacos in corn tortilla (or lettuce wrap), and g-f flatbread options round out the menu!

Once again, as is really always the case, make yourself known to the staffer serving you so that they can address your personal needs! ADVOCATE for you:)

Lopez on Lee – Cleveland Hts.

Ahhhhh,  Mexican!!  What can I say —- I love mexican food maybe best of all options and Lopez offers some truly amazing delectables.  You can get a frosty cold bottle of Green’s beer or a margarita to accompany your guacamole, chips, and escabeche!  Try the escabeche – ‘pickly’ vegetables – just the right amount of crispness and tartness!  Start with shrimp and grits or charred caesar salad (other salads too) and continue on with g-f options among the tacos, fajitas, or Big Plates.

Flying Fig – Ohio City, Cleveland west side

I was so excited to dine at Flying Fig.  We were meeting up with an amazing group of people we had not seen for awhile and everyone except me had been to dine there previously and loved it!  I made the reservation, inquired about g-f options and was assured that the kitchen at FF could accommodate.  It was suggested I let my server know what I was interested in having so that he could assist my choices.  Unfortunately, the server was not well informed about this before hand nor was he very knowledgeable in the needs.  As it turned out the accommodations included my being able to order a burger without a bun, a steak or the grilled salmon.   This was unexpected and disappointing but I figured it was coming from the kitchen of FF and would be one of the best of each of those options that I’d ever eat.  Well, not so much.  I chose the burger (no bun).  My burger was served on the plate with wimpy lettuce, cheese and bacon. Since I could not have fries I ordered a couple of sides that are indicated on the menu as g-f.  What was most disappointing to me was the lack of presentation to the dish.  Given the care and lovely presentations given to all the dishes presented to our table I assumed that they would at the very least attend to the dish they were serving me too. I was wrong.

Paladar – Woodmere

Paladar has been providing for the needs of g-f diners practically since opening – if not from the very beginning.  For as long as I have been choosing Paladar as an option it has never failed to provide tasty options. Service at Paladar has also always been remarkable and the atmosphere of the dining room is bustling.  There is not a beer option (not for lack of my promoting it) but I enjoy their margaritas and caipirinhas – or just club soda with lime.  Paladar has a separate menu for their g-f offerings with starters, sides, soups, salads, tacos, and entrees. You can dine at Paladar for Brunch, Lunch, Dinner and Happy Hour.

Because Paladar does not have a dedicated fryer the chips for the guacamole are off limits – but the veggie plate is a great option to accommodate.

Tommy’s on Coventry

At Tommy’s the fare is hearty and healthy with just a bit of indulgence thrown in for good measure – try the unbelievably amazing fries and milkshakes.  Tommy’s offers breakfast items (til 11:00 daily, later on Sat. and Sun.)  There is a g-f bread option available for wonderful grilled cheese sandwiches and BLT’s.  The burgers are phenomenal as are the falafel.  And, did I mention the fries and the milkshakes?

At Tommy’s the kitchen takes great care in the preparation of the g-f options but it is a shared kitchen – advocate, advocate, advocate – let them know you needs. Their disclaimer does not state ‘gluten-free’ rather it reads that care is taken but that they consider their menu items to be ‘gluten sensitive’.

Cafe Avalaun – Warrensville Hts.

The Fresh Meals Program at Cafe Avalaun rounds out my weekly meal planning.  With Fresh Meals you order ahead for meals that are prepared and packaged with instructions on heating and serving at home.  Your order will provide you with 2 portions of three options. Orders are due by Fridays at 5:00 and ready for pickup after noon on Tuesdays. Chef Brian Doyle is now offering a monthly menu where you pick 3 of about 10 entree options.  This past week we picked up Cioppino (italian seafood stew), Roasted Chicken with roasted garlic cauliflower mashers, and Pork Chops with chili whipped sweet potatoes and brussels sprouts. At Cafe Avalaun there are also Friday ‘pop-up’ dinners that are offered with a theme that varies from the typical everyday menu.  Some of the Friday options that have been offered include Burger Night, Italian Night, Chinese Night, Southern Fried Night, Pizza Night and more!!

Cafe Avalaun has a fully gluten-free kitchen – no gluten ever – where they also accommodate vegan, dairy-free, nut-free, and soy free diners.

Dessert Shop and Bakery offering cupcakes, scones both sweet and savory, muffins, whoopie pies and bread and rolls!  All gluten-free!!

Mariann writes 11/12/2016:

On this beautiful November Saturday our drive to the west side of Cleveland took us to the Lakewood neighborhood to check out the offerings at the newly opened Bouche Bakery and their g-f baked goods!

Our samplings for today included the savory cheddar jalapeno scone (5 stars according to my husband), vanilla frosted chocolate cupcake (beyond doubt the best chocolate cupcake we have ever tried and the buttercream frosting was extraordinary) and finally we even finished a slice of an amazing cinnamon bar (basically a nice thick slice of glazed cinnamon pecan bread).  We also brought home some blueberry muffins to taste test later in the week.

West Side Market

Ohio City

The West Side Market is Cleveland’s public oldest market and is home to 100 vendors offering meats, seafood, fruits, vegetables, baked goods, dairy, flowers, ready-to-eat foods, spices and nuts.

Vendors are friendly but be sure to ask if their items are gluten free.

Eileen shared her thoughts on gluten free at the market:

All the meat and vegetable vendors. We like Kaufman poultry and the vegetable vendor at the door off the parking lot make an immediate left and they are on your right. The fruit stand right across from them is very good.
Ohio City Pasta used to have gf pasta but it’s made at the same place as there other pasta.
I like Judy’s Oasis they have dips like hummus.
I love Urban Herbs especially their poultry seasoning.
For lunch I’ve eaten at Nates which is fast and cheap. Great Lakes Brewing is very gf friendly and good. There’s also Flying Fig or something Fig restaurant that is good.
A very very favorite is Momocho Mexican very gluten friendly and fabulous and very busy. I’m not sure it’s open for lunch but make reservations.

Namaste India Garden

Lakewood, OH

Anne posts (6/16)
After a ‘yoga hop’ event on International Yoga Day June 21st, a group of us dined at Namaste India Garden.
Although I was the only gluten-free attendee and it was my first time there, I was duly impressed with their menu, which clearly indicated both gluten-free and vegan options.
Those options were quite extensive in both the appetizer and main entrée categories. Can’t wait to go back and sample more of their menu.

I’d first tried going to Scrambler Marie’s soon after my celiac disease diagnosis years ago. My request for gluten free food was met with blank stares. So, I was delighted to see they now have a gluten free menu.

I went on a Saturday, mid-morning, and when I asked the greeter about their gluten free menu her answer was not reassuring. She said that she didn’t think they could really make anything gluten free. But, I decided to give it a try. They’d gone to the trouble of having a GF menu, after all.

Our assigned server could not have been less interested in assuring I had gluten free food. Instead of ordering one of their GF menu items, I erred on the side of caution and asked for 2 eggs cooked in a clean pan.

After quite a wait, a different server abruptly dropped the plate in front of me.

The eggs were fine. The attitude and care for GF dining – not so much.

Eat at your own risk.

Back in 2014 we had correspondence from Dewey’s Pizza about their testing out a gluten-free crust (see below).  The response has been positive and they are currently offering their pizza in a gluten-free option. Also on their menu are great salads.  Many of the salads are g-f and others can be modified to accommodate the diet.

Also, last month when I dined at Dewey’s they were offering Bard’s G-F beer based on recommendations from NEOCN!  We asked.  They listened. Voila!

Please keep in mind that Dewey’s is a shared kitchen.  Their staff has been very knowledgeable and helpful in the past so ask for what you need or what you are uncertain about.  You won’t be disappointed – their pizza is great!

Here’s a response from the GM of Dewey’s in NEO from our recent inquiry.

Thanks for getting back to me. Listed below is our allergy protocol. In short, we do our absolute best to ensure we serve the safest product. However, the one thing we can never completely eliminate is trace amounts of flour in the air as well as our ovens. So although our Gluten-Free pizza is safe for an overwhelming majority of those afflicted with celiac’s, for those that are HIGHLY sensitive, we cannot guarantee ZERO exposure.

However, this is what we do for guests who indicate to our serving staff that they have a gluten allergy:

We top the pizzas with gloves, using only fresh product from below our line that has not yet been at risk for cross-contamination. The pizza itself cooks in an aluminum tin so the pizza doesn’t make direct contact with our oven stones. When the pizza comes out, we use a clean cutter fresh from our dish machine that has not come in contact with any other pizzas yet.
So once again, not 100% full proof given that we have an open air kitchen and hand-toss our normal product. However, our process is about as good as it gets for a pizza place.
Next time you’re in at our Lee Road location, as to speak with a manager. They would be happy to demonstrate our protocol in-person. The GM there is named Anthony Ramos.

2/2015,     Thanks for sharing Norma, I will be in the area tomorrow and give this a try. Am looking forward to samples!

We ate lunch at Piada and we were excited to see a billboard in the restaurant announcing gluten-free options.  It looks like  the set up of Chipotle but very upscale and nice. We opted for the salads since they do not have gluten-free pasta or breads.  Be careful in the serving line as breadcrumbs were in one area. We asked to speak with the chef, and there is always a chef on hand. We asked for our salad items to be taken from the kitchen and not the line to avoid cross contamination. Almost all of the ingredients  were taken from the back. The chef seemed very knowledgeable about G.F. practices. The salad was great nicely tossed and containing a nice mixture not the regular bowl of lettuce with a few things on top. The serving line moves very quickly since it is designed for you to get your order and be able to return to work very quickly.

Some of the ice pop flavors include Watermelon Lime, Sea Salt Strawberry Cream, Lemon Ricotta, and Cucumber Kiwi!  All are made single batch – using fresh, locally sourced farm market fruits (when available), organic cane sugar, and farm market creams and milks!  To date, all items are gluten-free, some are vegan, and many new flavors are being created.

Pamela shares her experience:

Menu?  No

What did you order?
Salads, Steaks, Chicken

Was the server knowledgeable?

I dine at Trivs 2-3 times a month without incidence.  The staff is great about asking the kitchen any questions I need answered.  They are also great about changing the dishes (sauces, sides) to make it gluten-free.  They just switched the menu for the summer and I’m not as familiar with it yet, but I’m sure there will be a few items that I’ll be able to order with adjustments since they’re amazingly accommodating.

Thank you Pamela for your valuable comments:

Restaurants that I’ve dined at regularly without incidence but do not have a gluten-free menu.

What did you order?
salads, steaks, gf pasta

Was server knowledgeable?
Mostly – if not, they checked with the kitchen

When did you dine?
Mostly weekends, some weeknights.  I would recommend the two Bucci’s (J Bella and Crowne Plaza) because I’ve eaten at both several times without incidence. I dine at J Bellas 2-3 times a month and notice the staff is g-f aware.  They offer gf penne pasta, steaks and salads.

Crowne Plaza staff is not as gf aware but they are very nice about finding out the answers to your questions.  Not sure if they offer gf pasta but they do offer some of the same salads and steaks as J Bella.

Tree Hugger’s Cafe

NOTE: This review is from several years ago.

Their online GF menu is 3 years old and prices & options have changed, but you can use it as a guide for a discussion with staff.
When they served our group, the server was knowledgeable, but servers later could not answer if buckwheat pancakes were GF.
They have GF bread that was fresh. Their Kitchen is small, and their dining room is cafe-sized. Please be sure to remind them to use foil if food is prepared on shared grill, and request for food to be prepared
in a separate area.

Five Guys Burgers and Fries

Multiple Locations

Multiple locations in Ohio and around the country.

Made to order burgers, hand cut fries, and now Shakes!

from Mariann:
From my experience at Five Guys there are no g-f buns but there has been good protocol for handling g-f orders.  The staff has been careful to prep the burger with clean gloves, on a clean surface.  The burgers are usually made in a lettuce wrap style and since they are custom made you get to pick your toppings.  In all of the locations I have eaten in the fries have been cooked in a dedicated fryer so that makes them safe to eat for g-f diners.

I have heard that some locations may season their batches of fries
– so ask –
Always ask and confirm the standards of each location!!

I have not dined at a location since they introduced Shakes – so if anyone has any info on that post us a message………

Please note the following statement from their website:

Gluten Intolerance/Celiac Disease
Most people wanting to avoid gluten can eat anything we serve except for our large and small flour tortillas.
Everything else is fine to eat for most people wanting to avoid gluten, including our crispy corn tacos and our corn chips.
However, you should know that it’s possible our corn may have a small amount of gluten from potentially co-mingling with gluten-containing grains in the field.
If you are highly sensitive and would like us to change our gloves, we would be happy to do that at your request. Additionally, because our folks work with wheat tortillas all day long, there may be the possibility of cross-contact in our restaurants. We encourage you to carefully consider your dining choices.

Mimi’s had an article about a red brick pizza shop called My Pizzetta that just opened in North Royalton. They have GF. My son and I tried their regular pizza so far and it was very good. Not a sit-down but have a drive through. Their number is 440 237 1770. Mimis has half off gift certificates available. A 9″ pizza is about $8.50 with a topping. They have a website with their menu. They get their crusts from Mrs. P’s in Bedford which I saw online is a completely gluten free bakery. They separate the ingredients for the making of the GF pizza. All pizzas go through the same oven, putting the gluten free on a screen.

3 Palms Pizzeria and Bakery

Westlake, OH 44236

Nicole writes:

I dined this past Saturday at 3 Palms Pizzeria in Hudson, at First & Main.  I had their gluten free pizza and it was incredible.  While it is not a dedicated kitchen nor do they have a specific gluten free menu, they do make their own crust in house. There was a $3 upcharge for the GF crust. Obviously a concern given that there are other flours, but I spoke with the manager who said that all pans were separate and they take precaution.  I was fine and didn’t get sick at all.  It was by far the best crust I have ever eaten out.  They also have gluten free desserts in the case, and my mother in law had purchased a decadent chocolate cake for my birthday from there over the summer.

Fat Cats

Flats/Tremont Area

2061 West 10th Street
Cleveland, OH 44113

Bette shares:

GF Menu?: No What did you order?: hanger steak with veggies Was the server GF knowledgeable?: Yes, very knowledgeable Comments: We went to Fat Cats on a busy Saturday night. The server was extremely accommodating and knew precisely what I needed. She pointed out gluten free options, and indicated that the chef could modify many of the menu options to make them gluten free. The food was delicious, the service friendly. The ambiance was enjoyable, kind of a funky old house. I would recommend the restaurant. A couple tips: bring a slice of gluten free bread for the excellent (gluten free) tapenade. And be prepared to do a little negotiating about what is/isn’t safe to eat.

Thanks, Gay:

We had brunch on a Saturday at Fat Cats, 2061 W 10th, Cleveland (Tremont neighborhood) and the staff was eager to assist me with my gf needs. My choice was a mushroom omelet and they made sure to pan fry red skin potatoes so I could enjoy potatoes with my meal. Both were delicious and reasonably priced.  I have had light bite type suppers in the past and have been successful with their salads and soups. The owner is often in the kitchen and he has a positive attitude towards working with his customers. An added bonus is if you eat outside, you can glimpse Cleveland’s great skyline.

I also met a woman at the Brunswick Farmer’s Market who makes gluten free bakery (she is gluten intolerant). I had the pumpkin cupcake—it was sooooo good! She bakes out of her home, and her business name is Kelly’s Kakes.
