Lunch at Tommy’s last week included a g-f veggie burger on a g-f bun, fries, and a cheddar grilled cheese and tomato sandwich.   Tommy’s has been taking care of me and my family with all our gluten/vegan/dairy issues for years – graciously, intelligently and with great integrity.  It is so exciting to see a dedicated gluten-free menu, lots of options, and especially great food!  One reason they are always busy!

Thanks, Emily, for the following review:

I have been to Tommy’s in Coventry many times before.  They have always been very accommodating regarding gluten free food, though there were still limitations to their menu, and only a few options.  However, when I went to eat lunch there last week, I was plesantly surprised.  When I asked my server for the gluten free menu, she informed me that they now have gluten free bread and a dedicated fryer.  This means that a huge portion of the menu is now safe for gluten free customers!  The falafel is gluten free, as are the french fries.  Almost all of the sandwiches are now able to be ordered gluten free.  My waitress at Tommy’s was extremely knowledgeable and seemed excited to share the gluten free options available to me. I ordered the Ceebee sandwich (falafel, veggies, homos, sunflower seeds, cheese and sesame sauce) and french fries.  It was fantastic. When my meal arrived, my french fries had a toothpick in them to distinguish them from my friend’s fries that were likely fried in the normal fryer.  The waitress also made a point to tell me that she checked to make sure, and the sesame dressing was gluten free (I hadn’t asked!).   I also noticed while I was there that there was gluten free granola available, as well as some gluten free cookies.

I wish other restaurants would realize what Tommy’s has- with simple modification or two (in this case gluten free bread and a dedicated fryer), it can be very easy to accommodate gluten free customers.

Domino’s Pizza

(Controversial) Multiple Locations

Domino’s has pizza with gluten free crust.

Monday, Domino’s, the world’s largest delivery pizza chain, will announce plans to sell a pizza made with a gluten-free crust.

That is the thrilling start to the article on usatoday.com  What follows is quite concerning:

“We are the first national pizza delivery chain to offer this,” boasts Domino’s CMO Russell Weiner, who notes that while the crust is certified gluten-free, the pizza is still prepared in ovens with pizzas that aren’t gluten-free, so folks who are extra-sensitive need to be aware. The gluten-free pizza costs about $3 more. Most gluten-free products typically do cost more to make.

From the Domino’s press release:

While Domino’s new Gluten Free Crust is appropriate for those with mild gluten sensitivity, Domino’s and the NFCA do not recommend it for those with celiac disease. Domino’s and the NFCA found that while the crust is certified as gluten free, current store operations at Domino’s cannot guarantee that each handcrafted pizza will be completely free from gluten.

So, the crust is certified GF, but cross-contamination is a real concern.  I think I’ll skip it.  How about you?  Have you tried it?  Share your experience by commenting below.

Bob shared a review of Skye:

GF Menu?: Yes

Order: Crusted calamari app, seared Mahi served with butternut squash, baby spinach & quinoa entree.

Comments: Dined 4/27, the first day for the GF menu. New Executive Chef, Mariann Offtermatt, herself a Celiac, was kind enough to come to our table and chat about the menu and her plans. The meal was wonderful as is the dining room and staff. I highly recommend Skye for a spectacular dining experience in Mentor. My wife (not GF) and  I will return often. A couple of burgers are available on Udi’s buns for those who want Skye’s “Pub Fare”.

Thanks Mariann for sharing these pictures of some of the gluten free menu items:

Adrienne has shared her experience at this restaurant:

I had a wonderful GF pizza at this restaurant (a real treat!) and it was very good. They have been at this location for many years…. They do follow good practices against cross contamination and they wear gloves too.
We had a large pizza, and even my long suffering non-GF husband liked the thin and crispy crust. That pizza oven makes all the difference!
I did not ask about the pizza sauce, more like a marinara. Sauces don’t bother me as much as the pizza dough would. We also had onion and pepperoni toppings, both not a problem.
I think it was $17.00 for a large, not inexpensive, but it was at least 8 slices and very tasty. It just felt great to get out and eat a pizza with other people and feel ‘normal’. I know it has been at least 4 1/2- 5 years for me!!!
The owner was very accommodating and appreciative and very willing to share his knowledge, but of course I knew a great deal more!!!
He and his wife have had many requests over the years, so he found a distributor and got to work on it. He says he maintains sterile practices, and I asked about it, too. I also had no GI issues, which was fine with me!!!
I really hope he can draw GF people to the restaurant….I will definitely go again. It’s a small family run place and very homey.

NOTE: GF pizza crust comes in wrapped frozen from a GF company.
Per telephone, they said toppings were in separate bins, and separate pans were used. 4 piece & 8 piece size.
GF menu may be coming soon
