56 Kitchen

33587 Aurora Rd, Solon, Ohio 44139

56 Kitchen is a storefront next to Planet Fitness in the Solon Square shopping center.

But when you walk through the door you are in a slice of gluten free heaven. Lots of choices on the menu. Both the greeter and the server agreed that the kitchen was well aware of requirements of making sure gluten free food is served gluten free.

The friendly server shared that Udi’s crusts are used for gluten free pizzas. And the fryers are dedicated gluten free – for all fried foods. And the flourless chocolate cake is always available.

I had a hard time making a choice but settled on the “Grilled Oyster Steak Sandwich” and substituted the available Masa Waffle (add $2) for the bread. Served open faced it was oh so tasty. The waffle was a thoughtful and delicious gluten free base. Highly recommend the fries. I chose well.

Other food, enjoyed by gluten eating diners, looked and smelled great. All were happy with their choices and readily agreed to return with me so I can give other menu items a try.

I enjoyed lunch at Zaytoon before a Playhouse Square matinee.

The small restaurant has just 2 tables and seating on stools along the windows.

The menu has items designated gluten free and the woman taking the order seemed aware of GF options and kitchen procedures. And the kitchen is open so you can watch the chef make your lunch.

Chicken soup was served piping hot with lots of chicken and an interesting touch of cinnamon. The falafel plate comes with 2 sides and I chose hummus and fries. All was really tasty.

Merwin’s Wharf

1785 Merwin Ave, Cleveland, Ohio 44113
Myself, my husband and another friend ate lunch here Sept. 28. As it was a nice day we ate outside, with a lovely river view, rose bushes in bloom yet and very pleasant overall. I was presented with a laminated gluten-free menu that contained a nice selection. Most sandwiches were available gluten-free with lettuce replacing the usual bun, which was fine. Service was very good and my meal (Cuban type sandwich but on lettuce with green beans on the side) was tasty and filling. Prices were a bit on the high side, but the value was well worth it. Afterwards we strolled the waterfront and examined the information signs detailing the area’s history. A pleasant time and I’m sure we will return. FYI In addition to a fire pit area outside, there is also a huge outdoor fireplace with comfortable seating. I can imagine that evenings here are fabulous.

Strip Steakhouse

3684 Detroit Rd
Avon, OH 44011

Anne Writes:

My husband and I dined at this restaurant July 25th to celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary. We were very pleasantly impressed with the atmosphere (restored Evers Barn 1851 in historic Olde Avon Village), menu selections, serving sizes and service.

They have an extensive (laminated!) gluten-free menu. I chose almond prawns appetizer, lobster bisque, 6 oz. steak filet with Béarnaise sauce, garlic buttered broccoli, scalloped potatoes and crème brulee for dessert. My husband had a huge steak and house pierogis. The side dishes come family style and, although they are presented for 2 servings, they could easily serve 3 to 4.

This restaurant is famous for its meats – all are of the highest quality and are aged 21 days in a vacuum seal. They were perfectly cooked and extremely tender and juicy. Our server could not have been nicer nor more efficient. We must have spent about 2 hours there slowly dining and enjoying ourselves.

Lastly, all this comes at a price (but we had a $150 gift certificate to use, so we were splurging). Even so, we will likely go back there again, perhaps for a special occasion, as the food was scrumptious and we truly enjoyed our evening (especially the gluten-free ordering ease!).

Had a great lunch at Wahlburgers at Prospect and Ontario in the shadow of the casino.

The menu features burgers (of course), other sandwiches and salads. There is no gluten free menu but I was reassured by both the seater and server that most everything on the menu could be made gluten free. The server checked with the kitchen and confirmed that each fried item had its own fryer and was safely GF.

While they do have a GF bun, I chose to have my burger as a Chopped Salad Bowl. The Sweet Potato Tots were a large portion and easily shared.

I’d return if I were in the area but don’t think I’d make a special trip.

Club Isabella does not have a dedicated gluten-free menu however meals are made to order and many menu items can be modified to accommodate the g-f diner.
The dining room at Club Isabella is quite lovely making this a very nice option for an evening of Fine Dining.  The restaurant is conveniently located for dinner before Cleveland Orchestra events or to complement a trip to any of the University Circle museums including the Cleveland Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Botanical Gardens, and the Cleveland Historical Society!

Starbucks has introduced a Gluten-Free Smoked Canadian Bacon & Egg hot breakfast sandwich.

From Starbucks’ website:

At last, a breakfast sandwich for our gluten-free friends. Tasty cherrywood-smoked Canadian bacon, an egg patty and reduced-fat white cheddar on a gluten free roll. It’s all prepared in a certified gluten-free environment and sealed for your safety. We then warm and serve it in its own oven-safe parchment bag to avoid any cross-contamination.

Starbucks has been increasing the number of gluten free offerings. Since the introduction of the Marshmallow Dream Bar Starbucks has been adding additional certified gluten free packaged snacks. You can find a range of chips, cookies, jerkies, yogurt and bananas. But it is only now that you can get a sandwich.

The GF roll stood up well to the heating and eating without crumbling, even having a slight chew. The filling is comfort food: soft and a bit salty.

The Starbucks workers at one location opened the package before heating. Do make sure that the item you receive has remained sealed in its package.

It’s nice to know I can find a meal while traveling thanks to the ubiquity of Starbucks.

As always, Starbucks says:

We cannot guarantee that any of our products are free from allergens (including dairy, eggs, soy, tree nuts, wheat and others) as we use shared equipment to store, prepare and serve them.

Mariann writes:

Mia Bella – Little Italy, located at the corner of Murray Hill Rd. and Mayfield Rd., has much to offer the g-f diner.  In every section of the menu – Soups, Salads, Appetizers, Pizzas, Entrees and Sides there are items to choose.

Our party of 6 had a reservation this past Saturday evening and we were happy that we reserved in advance.  The dining room is small and super busy, but we were impressed that they are sufficiently staffed to make it all happen.

Reservations are most highly recommended!!

We chose salads to start our meal off.  The selections at our table included Roasted Beet Salad, Caesar Salad, and Albanian Chopped Salad.  All  were freshly prepared with nice crisp vegetables and great dressings.  The entrees chosen by our party included Seafood Risotto (the scampi were huge), Cheese Tortellini (pictured here)
Cheese Ravioli with Artichoke Hearts, and Mushroom Risotto.

My fellow diners declared each and every dish to be wonderful!

For the g-f diner Mia Bella offers a g-f pasta with most pasta dishes able to be modified to accommodate.  According to the on-line menu there is also the option for g-f pizza although I did not notice this while in the restaurant so will need to go back and do some investigating on that. The Risotto dishes are g-f – the seafood option has a red sauce and the mushroom option has a white sauce.  G-F Entree options include Lamb Chops, Ribeye Steak and Scallops.  To finish the meal my fellow diners chose Espresso’s or digestive liqueurs – me – I chose the Spumoni Gelato!

I’m looking forward to going back to dine at Mia Bella – to try the pizza or one of the pasta dishes and also the calamari appetizer.

And to have another Spumoni…….

The menu at Gigi’s on Fairmount is styled on Small Plate Appetizers, Salads and Soups, and a variety of Bruschetta.  They also offer 3 entrees at dinner which your server will describe as they change daily.  There are a number of items on the menu that are naturally g-f but the restaurant carries g-f bread (Udi’s) so even the Bruschetta can be accommodated.

On my first visit to Gigi’s our table shared an olive medley and cheese platter that were both substantial and beautifully presented.  We also had salads that were plentiful enough to be entrees.  Of the three entrees offered on the day I dined 2 of the 3 were g-f.  My choices were Seared Scallops on garlic grits and Braised Lamb Shank over mashed potatoes.  Both dishes included a lovely selection of beans and carrots in the plating of the entrees.
The dining experience at Gigi’s was very pleasant.  Our server was gracious, attentive and knowledgeable.  The room is a bit on the dark side but there is candlelight and reflections on all the mirrored walls so the room appears large and welcoming.  The adjacent lounge has a bar and lovely sofa and cluster seating for a group gathering.  On nice weather days the sidewalk patio looks to be quite welcoming.
While the wine list is limited it includes some very wonderful wines from around the world.  Our party enjoyed a Savignon Blanc from Australia, a Montepulciano from Italy, and a Pinot Noir from Oregon.  Cocktails are also served at Gigi’s.

Dining Out G-F in NEO

April, 2017

Jilly’s Music Room

NEOCN first published the link to Jilly’s Music Room back in Sept. 2014 when Jill contacted us to register as a presenter at our April 2015 Vendor Fair. I’m embarrassed to say that it took me almost two years before I ventured out to JMR to check out the menu and dine on-site.  JMR is 100% gluten-free!

What a wonderful surprise awaited us on a lovely Saturday afternoon!  We started with fried mushrooms and fried artichokes and then……

we followed up with a sampling of sliders,

Grilled brie, applewood smoked bacon, and fig jam.
Fried bologna with yellow mustard and pickle.
Tuna slider with field greens and vinaigrette.
Flank steak, roasted red pepper, cheese, and fig jam.

Ice cold Bard’s beer and this Saturday afternoon was a complete success.

JMR sits in an area of Akron that will be experiencing some real construction headaches in the coming months.  Like many areas of NEO.  Let this not deter you,  please!! —- RATHER —- make it a point to persevere and head there anyway.  You will be treated to amazing delectables and be providing a community service to a local shop that will need guests to make the effort for them.  Businesses struggle under our road construction projects so it is in our interest to go the extra mile or more!   You’ll be glad you made the trek.

In the past month the name of Astoria Market and Cafe came up in at least 3 different conversations.  How could I not be intrigued.  We headed out to Astoria on a Thursday evening after work and before heading back downtown to the theater.  Our arrival coincided with a private event going on at the cafe so we were considering turning around and heading back downtown but happily we continued to our destination.  The market portion includes Mediterranean specialty cheese and meat deli, coolers of beer, wines, and other beverages, freezers of frozen specialties and shelves of interesting dry goods. The cafe portion is spacious and comfortable with a staff that is attentive and welcoming.  It turns out that they have a separate party room so the cafe had lots of room for walk-in guests.  By the time we were served our meals all the tables in the cafe were filled.

The cafe menu is Tapas style but the big plates are generous and filling so there is something for everyone.

We shared a bowl of olives and started our meal with Avgolemono Chicken Soup with Rice – a classic Greek soup of chicken broth, egg yolks and lemon juice.
Following the soup we shared Stuffed Grape Leaves – some of the best I have ever eaten!
I did not choose an entrée this night because I was full from the hearty soup and grape leaves.
But my husband, who does not require a g-f diet, chose an entrée of Ricotta Ravioli and Meatballs.  He declared the dish ‘amazing’.

Dine. Sip. Shop. Chill.  This is the motto of Astoria and they are doing a great job of making it happen.  Check it out.

If you’ve been following my posts you know that I go to The Fairmount in Cleveland Hts. a lot!  There are many good reasons for going – the location, the food, the beer (Bard’s), the phenomenal staff!! the great atmosphere, the outdoor patio, the camaraderie and energy!  All I really want to share here, this month, is the picture of my recent burger.  Because this burger was plated with such care it was presented as a piece of art!  And, every dish that is presented at The Fairmount will leave you feeling that your meal was made special for you!

I’ve recently been to BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse in Orlando, Florida and closer to home in Mentor and North Olmsted.

At each visit I had a tasty meal and can highly recommend the Kale And Roasted Brussels Sprouts Salad and Fire-Roasted Barbacoa Chicken from the gluten free menu.

I was disappointed with the Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Pizookie®: Fresh-baked chocolate chip cookie with rich vanilla bean ice cream. Sounds great. But the serving I received was underbaked mush with a mediocre vanilla ice cream. Still, points for having this item on the menu.

The GF menu also has a GF pizza, entrees and sides. While the main menu says they have GF buns for burgers, burgers are not listed on the GF menu.

BurgerFi is a newish chain in our area with 2 locations in NEOhio.   When I asked about getting their burger that they wrap in lettuce instead of a bun I was warned that the buns are everywhere in the kitchen. I wished that the employee would have said, “We have a procedure for that.” Now that I think about it I wish every restaurant I go to and say, I have to eat gluten-free or I have celiac would say that.

The nice thing about BurgerFi is that they have a lettuce wrap in a little cellophane baggie that goes halfway up the burger so that you can hold it and eat it.  I was surprised that it was 50 cents extra but it was so nice I was happy to pay it.

I also sent a comment to BurgerFi on their website suggesting that they have a procedure for preparing and serving GF.

Although I was the only gluten-free attendee and it was my first time there, I was duly impressed with their menu, which clearly indicated both gluten-free and vegan options.
Those options were quite extensive in both the appetizer and main entrée categories. Can’t wait to go back and sample more of their menu.

At the Steeping room I had the full tea listed on the menu, which included tea sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream, tea cookies, fruit, and a tea cake all gluten free and delish!!!!
The only problem I had was my non gluten free friends wanted to share things so they could taste what they hadn’t ordered.
I tried to explain that I couldn’t share because I couldn’t try any of theirs.

When in Austin have fun at tea and check with other tearooms to see if you can have more than “the salad”.

The manager, Joseph, was extremely nice and helpful. He brought their recipe book out and read off ingredients for the sides I was interested in. Almost everything is made fresh on site. The fries are off limits since they don’t have a dedicated fryer, but there is a nice variety of items to choose from. I tried the apple slaw and garlic mashed potatoes. Very good. The one downside was that they have only one safe sauce. They get the others ready made in bags with no ingredient labels. He said he was going to ask about that. It was an excellent meal. I am new to gluten-free dining so I might have missed asking everything I should have, but I had a good experience. We did go late and were the only diners. The manager was aware that this is serious and not just a fad so I would expect them to be helpful other times too. .

San Francisco Stir Fry

7271 Center Street
Mentor, Ohio
(Across from Yours Truly)

Diane writes:

Really enjoyed my dinner at this “create your own stir fry” place.  The menu has GF options noted.  When alerted of the need to be GF I was told the kitchen takes care to use a clean pan and utensils and change gloves, while also being told that gluten containing dishes are prepared in the same space.  I’m hopeful that if a restaurant understands the chance of cross contact they will try to avoid it – though I know that may be wishful thinking.

You fill a bowl  with veggies, then choose a base (white or brown rice or shredded Napa cabbage are GF, but the noodles are not), choose a sauce (3 GF choices: Brown Sauce, House Sweet and Sour or Spicy Thai Sweet Chili) and add a protein. Gluten eaters have 10 additional sauce choices.  Prices vary based on bowl size and protein choice.

I had the large bowl of veggies over a base of 1/2 brown rice and 1/2 shredded Napa cabbage.  Just went with the veggie bar which included tofu and edamame among its 25+ options and did not add an additional protein.  The Brown Sauce was flavorful with an evident, and appreciated, note of garlic.  The portion size was ample.

My dinner was $8.25 with hot tea another $1.  The place is not fancy.  You fill out a paper form, pay at the register, then get your own silverware and condiments.  The paper form even asks: Are your gluten-free selections due to an allergy?

I’d return the next time I’m in the area, though I wouldn’t make a special trip.  If I lived nearby I’d frequent the restaurant.

I really enjoyed my recent dinner at Sixth & Pine, the restaurant on the 3rd floor of the Beachwood Place Nordstorm store.

The menu has 3 salads, 2 entrees and 1 dessert labeled gluten free.  The Warm Salmon & Spinach Salad was fresh and tasty and came as described on the menu: organic baby spinach, roasted salmon, bacon, petite tomatoes, red onion, parmesan crisp, warm mustard vinaigrette.

My gluten eating companions enjoyed their soups and sandwiches.

Finally got to try it out.  When you choose the gluten-free dough it comes out in a special pan.  The preparer put on new gloves when putting my toppings on.  And there also was a separate knife for cutting the pizza up.   And very delicious!!!!!!!!!

9-21-15  Diane writes:
Ate at Pizza Fire yesterday.  The pizza maker was well informed and, at my request, agreed to use fresh “from the back” ingredients for toppings.  She said the GF crust is frozen and is baked in its own pan and cut using a separate cutter.  They will take care to change gloves.  The GF crust costs an extra $1 and was a thin crust which arrived crisp from the oven.  However the toppings were wet and soon soaked in making the crust soggy. I had the Authentic Neapolitan Red Sauce and 3 veggie toppings.   I found the flavors bland, but perhaps a different choice of sauce or toppings would offer an improvement.  From order to eating was under 10 minutes.   It’s a great fast GF choice, though not the best GF pizza.

During a recent visit, our server carefully checked with the kitchen to insure that the stuffed peppers did not contain crushed crackers. (I would not have thought that stuffed peppers would contain any gluten, but the server thought to question this herself which is to her credit.)
Fortunately, the kitchen response was that there definitely was no crackers nor any gluten of any kind in the peppers – and the meal was both safe and delicious.

They do offer gluten-free pasta, which takes a little more time to prepare.
Unfortunately, my gluten-free pasta (which appears to be corn-based angel hair variety) was somewhat undercooked and instead of the marinara sauce I ordered, it appears they just opened a can of stewed tomatoes and dumped it over the pasta.
Also, my husbands fish was not well filetted as there were quite a few bones left in it together with some scales left on the fish.

Also, they barely charge anything additional for ordering gluten-free. The burger was only $0.50 more for the bun, and the 12-inch gluten-free pizza is the same price as their 13-inch regular pizza.

Their GF menu includes:
Grilled Chicken Wings • Chicken Tenders • Chicken Tender Platter • Potato Skins
Salads (All dressings gluten-free) • Pizza • Burgers • All Chicken Sandwiches
Chicken Parmigiana • Chicken Florentine • Chicken Broccolini • Baked Penne
Pasta Feast • Penne Pasta with GF Meatballs • Pasta • Penne Pasta with Sausage
Penne Pasta with Mushroom Sauce • Penne Pasta with Tomato Basil Sauce

Stanley Park is the second largest urban green space park on the North American Continent – second only to Central Park in NYC!!  It is quite lovely!

At the Pavilion in the Rose Garden is a wonderful Bar and Grille with g-f friendly food options and a well informed staff to serve your every need:)

We were seated on the quiet and quite lovely deck overlooking the gardens where I relished the Smoked Fresh Tomato Soup and the Poutine along with my Bard’s Beer.  The soup was hot, thick and super flavorful, the Poutine was covered in thick and aromatic mushroom gravy with chewy and salty chef-made cheese curd!  The Bard’s was Cold, Crisp and totally Craved!  Our server was a delight – friendly, attentive and knowledegable – which based on others diners experiences, as we witnessed, was typical for the venue!

Searching for gluten-free options while in Vancouver BC led me to Lemonade Gluten Free Bakery and some of the most amazing sweet treats I have ever had in my entire life!  Often I feel cheated after visiting gluten-free bakeries since so many of the treats I sample don’t present themselves well in terms of flavor or texture BUT!!  not here!!  oh no, not at Lemonade.

Tim and I went in a search for sweet treats for breakfast and we were not disappointed. We also could not pick so we just had to have what our hearts called out for……..  On the spot we sampled the Profiterole, Cinnamon Danish, Pear Almond Brioche, Berry Muffin, and Chocolate Croissant – while taking a bag for later of seeded breads and buns!

Everything we ate was Simply Divine with the seeded breads making our dinner at the harbor later that evening the Perfect Vacation Finale!

Edible Canada at the Market

Vancouver, BC Canada

212-1551 Johnston St.
Granville Island,  Vancouver
British Columbia. CANADA

A Note from Mariann – June 2015 – My Summer Vacation:)

In June I traveled to the Pacific Northwest, specifically Olympia WA, Puget Sound San Juan Islands, finishing up in Vancouver, BC, Canada!

The following commentary relates to our meal at Edible Canada at the Market on Granville Island!

We had a wonderful encounter in Vancouver while visiting Granville Market.  After repeated attempts to find a place to enjoy an evening cocktail with dinner, that would allow me to partake, Tim and I wandered into the courtyard at Edible Canada.  A Bistro, Artisan Store and Canadian specialty small batch treat shop (more on that in a minute) with lots of options and accommodations available for gluten-free dining.

To start – the bar stocks a local g-f brew, the Whistler Brewery,  g-f Lager,  Forager!  A great beer.   We dined on Chorizo Chowder, Salmon, and Sturgeon,  with locally harvested fresh vegs,   Dinner was a delight!  Ambiance amazing!  and the Service was spectacular – thank you Laura!

After dinner we sat at the bar for a coffee and hot chocolate drink while simultaneously taking side trips in the Artisan store – stocking up on handmade caramel popcorn, dark chocolate coated sponge candy, cake-in-a-jar, smoked salmon, and sea salts.

When you have the opportunity to escape away for a break – Vancouver is an amazing place to visit- The city is full of g-f friendly options and with super informed staff.  My suggestion would be this –  if the person at the door has no clue what you are asking when making a g-f inquiry don’t go there – keep looking for options in the neighborhood or just head to the dock and take the Aquabus across the harbor to Granville Harbor for your shopping and dining pleasures.  You will not be disappointed:)

I’d first tried going to Scrambler Marie’s soon after my celiac disease diagnosis years ago. My request for gluten free food was met with blank stares. So, I was delighted to see they now have a gluten free menu.

I went on a Saturday, mid-morning, and when I asked the greeter about their gluten free menu her answer was not reassuring. She said that she didn’t think they could really make anything gluten free. But, I decided to give it a try. They’d gone to the trouble of having a GF menu, after all.

Our assigned server could not have been less interested in assuring I had gluten free food. Instead of ordering one of their GF menu items, I erred on the side of caution and asked for 2 eggs cooked in a clean pan.

After quite a wait, a different server abruptly dropped the plate in front of me.

The eggs were fine. The attitude and care for GF dining – not so much.

Pizza Hut

Local and Multiple Locations Nationwide.

Check out the listing at the Pizza Hut webpage  for all the locations offering their
version of gluten-free pizza.

Multiple locations nationwide.

Pizza Hut, working with Udi’s and GIG (the Gluten Intolerance Group) is now offering a gluten free pizza in about a third of all stores. The one size, 10 inch pizza, (6 slices) is $9.99 for cheese and $10.99 for pepperoni. Check for Locations here.
The Udi’s® Certified Gluten-Free crust is stored in a separate container, on a separate shelf in their fridge. The cheese, marinara sauce and pepperoni are stored in a gluten-free designated kit, and every gluten-free pizza is freshly baked on designated parchment paper in their ovens. Other toppings can be added, but there is no guarantee about these being gluten free.

In addition to these storage techniques, team members who make your gluten-free pizza wear gloves and even use a designated gluten-free pizza cutter to cut your pizza to perfection.

Disclaimer? Yes, (as many restaurants do), Pizza Hut has this to say:

“While Pizza Hut® is proud to offer pizzas with gluten-free ingredients, Pizza Hut kitchens are not gluten-free environments. Due to the handcrafted nature of our menu items, variations in vendor-supplied ingredients, and the use of shared cooking and preparation areas, we cannot assure you that our restaurant environment or any menu item will be completely free of gluten.”

Diane writes:

I had dinner at the Granite City at Legacy Village last week. They have a gluten free menu which has a large disclaimer about not being a gluten free environment and suggests speaking with a member of the management team. Our server quickly called over the General Manager, Weston Baril, who reassured me that the items on the menu could be prepared safely, suggesting steak or grilled chicken or fish.

He noted that the gluten free bun offered for sandwiches was heated in the commmunal toaster but could be heated in the salamander which is GF. He said he’d alert the kitchen to expect a GF order. I ordered grilled salmon, broccoli and a baked potato. All were fine, though not outstanding. Gluten eating companions thought their burgers were ok. None of us was thrilled but decided we’d return and order differently.

Our site guest Rob E. writes  (5/10/16)

As a celiac, I am on the fence about this place.  The foreign cashier at the register was friendly, but he clearly did not understand that my food needed to be prepared separately.  I had to speak with one of the other servers who was extremely understanding and had them re-prep the “gluten free” dish with new gloves.  Nonetheless, I became good friends with the bathroom 60 minutes later.

The food was very good, but I am skeptical that the prep area is safe enough for true celiacs, especially given all the fresh Naan being handled by the staff.  I may give this place another try and will post an update; in the meantime, celiacs should use extreme caution here.

Diane writes:

Stopped by the new Choolaah Indian BBQ. The greeter at the door was knowledgeable and explained that while they do have gluten free items indicated on the menu, they are not appropriate for those of us with celiac disease. “Too much flour around”.

Diane writes:
There’s a new place to try at the Beachwood Place food court, located next to Chick-fil-a. It’s a Piada-type place, but has gluten free pasta. While you watch, the chef creates a pasta or salad with your choice of toppings, meat, sauce. The meatballs have gluten and there are croutons, breadsticks and gluten filled desserts. But they use a clean pan and spoon and the chef used clean gloves and was aware of issues of cross-contamination. I had GF pasta with marinara sauce and lots of vegetables. The previously cooked GF pasta (confirmed cooked in clean pot – new water) fell apart with reheating in the sauce, as GF pasta will do. But it was a huge portion, very reasonably priced, fresh and tasty. Companion enjoyed a colorful salad – another GF option.

Back in 2014 we had correspondence from Dewey’s Pizza about their testing out a gluten-free crust (see below).  The response has been positive and they are currently offering their pizza in a gluten-free option. Also on their menu are great salads.  Many of the salads are g-f and others can be modified to accommodate the diet.

Also, last month when I dined at Dewey’s they were offering Bard’s G-F beer based on recommendations from NEOCN!  We asked.  They listened. Voila!

Please keep in mind that Dewey’s is a shared kitchen.  Their staff has been very knowledgeable and helpful in the past so ask for what you need or what you are uncertain about.  You won’t be disappointed – their pizza is great!

Here’s a response from the GM of Dewey’s in NEO from our recent inquiry.

Thanks for getting back to me. Listed below is our allergy protocol. In short, we do our absolute best to ensure we serve the safest product. However, the one thing we can never completely eliminate is trace amounts of flour in the air as well as our ovens. So although our Gluten-Free pizza is safe for an overwhelming majority of those afflicted with celiac’s, for those that are HIGHLY sensitive, we cannot guarantee ZERO exposure.

However, this is what we do for guests who indicate to our serving staff that they have a gluten allergy:

We top the pizzas with gloves, using only fresh product from below our line that has not yet been at risk for cross-contamination. The pizza itself cooks in an aluminum tin so the pizza doesn’t make direct contact with our oven stones. When the pizza comes out, we use a clean cutter fresh from our dish machine that has not come in contact with any other pizzas yet.
So once again, not 100% full proof given that we have an open air kitchen and hand-toss our normal product. However, our process is about as good as it gets for a pizza place.
Next time you’re in at our Lee Road location, as to speak with a manager. They would be happy to demonstrate our protocol in-person. The GM there is named Anthony Ramos.

2/2015,     Thanks for sharing Norma, I will be in the area tomorrow and give this a try. Am looking forward to samples!

Norma writes:

Unexpectedly had the opportunity to visit the museum this Labor Day weekend and with no reservation for dinner found that their was room for a party of two at Provenance:)  Inquiries to the kitchen offered many options that could be modified in the kitchen.  This is not my favorite way to dine but I figured I would check it out and be appreciative of the opportunity to relax and have my meal prepared.  I chose to have a soup over salad – it is so rare to have the option –  going with Chilled Cucumber with Thai Chili and Creme Fraiche; super good!  Pureed cucumber with just the right bite of spice and the cool creaminess of the Creme Fraiche.   For my entree I had the Lamb dish with the lamb  cooked to perfection, still,  I was disappointed in the side dish which was supposed to be polenta but was really just corn grits – and not really good corn grits either.  One of the problems with modifications is that ingredients are subbed or completely removed with nothing added to build on the flavors.  Always a good question to ask –  the Risotto dish looked appealing and most likely would have had the depth of flavor I was seeking.  I would recommend Provenance next time you are visiting the museum but make specific inquiries on the components of the plate.

We ate lunch at Piada and we were excited to see a billboard in the restaurant announcing gluten-free options.  It looks like  the set up of Chipotle but very upscale and nice. We opted for the salads since they do not have gluten-free pasta or breads.  Be careful in the serving line as breadcrumbs were in one area. We asked to speak with the chef, and there is always a chef on hand. We asked for our salad items to be taken from the kitchen and not the line to avoid cross contamination. Almost all of the ingredients  were taken from the back. The chef seemed very knowledgeable about G.F. practices. The salad was great nicely tossed and containing a nice mixture not the regular bowl of lettuce with a few things on top. The serving line moves very quickly since it is designed for you to get your order and be able to return to work very quickly.

Super beautiful Saturday evening in Cleveland, The Summer Solstice.   Heading to the Cleveland Museum of Art Solstice Celebration we stopped first for dinner at Michelangelo’s in Little Italy.  While I was not sure what to expect since I will typically call ahead and find out the details of their gluten-free awareness I was pleasantly surprised to find that they are very accommodating.  Our server explained that they have gluten-free pasta and lots of sauces to have with it but since I do not typically eat pasta I was more interested in the Entree Offerings.  I was not disappointed.  The gluten-free options offered included two fish items, duck and tenderloin.   The evenings specials included a Mushroom Risotto and a Cioppino – both of which might have appealed to me but which I forgot to inquire about – next time!  Our server recommended either the Duck or the Tenderloin coupled with a risotto on the side and I opted for the duck!  It was perfectly prepared and totally yummy!  She also recommended the Arneis wine which was amazing and which I had never had before.  The restaurant was packed – including a huge private party in one of the dining rooms so service was a bit bogged down but our server was attentive and gracious and extremely helpful.    (6/14)

Some of the ice pop flavors include Watermelon Lime, Sea Salt Strawberry Cream, Lemon Ricotta, and Cucumber Kiwi!  All are made single batch – using fresh, locally sourced farm market fruits (when available), organic cane sugar, and farm market creams and milks!  To date, all items are gluten-free, some are vegan, and many new flavors are being created.

Cassandra Fears whips up lovely caramels, marshmallows, sponges and truffles in her kitchen then hand dips them one at a time for sweetly exquisite treats!  The chocolate she uses in the manufacture of her candies is gluten-free and the above items listed include only pure sugars, creams, and flavorings.

Note to the wary!  Cassandra does produce – in the same kitchen – brownies and other baked goods that are not gluten-free so (currently) this is a shared equipment facility.
