Kitchen Social

Pinecrest, several Columbus locations

https://ourkitchensocial.com/

Kitchen Social has recently opened at Pinecrest. They also have several locations in the Columbus area.

I enjoyed dinner here on a recent weeknight. Reservations were definitely needed as the place was hopping, including the packed bar.

There is a gluten free menu with a number of options. The knowledgeable server assured that the kitchen takes appropriate precautions with allergen designated orders. My entree was announced as gluten free when it was served to me.

I would order the Grilled Salmon salad again. The greens were very fresh and the roasted sweet potatoes, quinoa, and almonds were a great combination of tastes. I just wish the fish had been served less well done.

Two companions tried the Tuna Bowl. One ordered off the regular menu and it was served with farro. The gluten free one had only rice. Otherwise, they looked the same. And both diners reporting liking the dishes.

Nothing Bundt Cakes

South Euclid, Avon, Canton

First the bad news: Nothing Bundt Cakes makes beautiful (mostly) gluten filled cakes.

The (maybe) good news is that “gluten-free flavor is available at select bakeries”.

This bakery makes only bundt cakes in a variety of sizes. There were a number of flavors on display, one of which was gluten free chocolate chip.

The counter clerk shared a binder with cake ingredients and assured me that separate pans and utensils are used in preparation.

The “Bundtlet” was a large muffin size, moist and dotted with mini chocolate chips. It was topped with their signature cream cheese frosting. A truly decadent treat.

Two sizes are available gluten free. The “Bundlet” was $5 (50 cents more than the gluten filled options) and 8 inch for $25 ($3 more). The clerk said that cakes are available with 20 minutes notice.

I visited the South Euclid store located on the North side of Cedar Center – 13949 Cedar Rd, South Euclid, OH 44118.

Other nearby stores are in Avon (35925 Detroit Rd, Avon, OH 44011) and Canton (4468 Belden Village St NW, Canton, OH 44718). They may have the gluten free cakes.

Jersey Mike’s

Multiple locations

I had a good feeling about Jersey Mike’s even before entering the restaurant.  A large poster in the window advertised gluten free subs on Udi’s bread.

The friendly staff clearly knew their gluten free stuff.  They recited the disclaimer: we are not a gluten free facility and then sprang into action – changing gloves, wiping surfaces, getting special condiments and fixings from the back, reaching for a clean knife.

You watch them make the sub sandwich and the team cheerfully responded to my ongoing questions.

It is thrilling to be offered a choice in sandwich size.  I chose the regular size which by itself made 2 meals for me.  But just knowing I could have had the giant size sub . . .

I recommend the Turkey Breast & Provolone which came piled high with turkey.  The Udi’s roll held up well even making it to my enjoyment of the “leftovers” later in the day.

Being able to enjoy a sandwich while out and about makes me happy.  I’ll return for more happiness.

I ate at the Mayfield Village location and Jersey Mike’s has many other locations around.

Starbucks

Everywhere

Starbucks has introduced a Gluten-Free Smoked Canadian Bacon & Egg hot breakfast sandwich.

From Starbucks’ website:

At last, a breakfast sandwich for our gluten-free friends. Tasty cherrywood-smoked Canadian bacon, an egg patty and reduced-fat white cheddar on a gluten free roll. It’s all prepared in a certified gluten-free environment and sealed for your safety. We then warm and serve it in its own oven-safe parchment bag to avoid any cross-contamination.

Starbucks has been increasing the number of gluten free offerings. Since the introduction of the Marshmallow Dream Bar Starbucks has been adding additional certified gluten free packaged snacks. You can find a range of chips, cookies, jerkies, yogurt and bananas. But it is only now that you can get a sandwich.

The GF roll stood up well to the heating and eating without crumbling, even having a slight chew. The filling is comfort food: soft and a bit salty.

The Starbucks workers at one location opened the package before heating. Do make sure that the item you receive has remained sealed in its package.

It’s nice to know I can find a meal while traveling thanks to the ubiquity of Starbucks.

As always, Starbucks says:

We cannot guarantee that any of our products are free from allergens (including dairy, eggs, soy, tree nuts, wheat and others) as we use shared equipment to store, prepare and serve them.

I recently had a very positive mail-order experience on an entire metric ton of bagels (ok, I may be slightly exaggerating on the quantity.  But only slightly.).
