Garden Lites

Multiple Locations/Locally and Nationally

Thank you Diane for sharing!

Great finds in the frozen food section at Costco today. Garden Lites Zucchini Chocolate Muffins were well priced at $9.99 for 14 individually wrapped GF muffins.  At 120 calories each with 4g of protein and 5g of fiber, I can easily justify one for breakfast or a guilt free snack. I also bought Garden Lites Zucchini Souffles – 7 for $9.69 after $3.25 instant coupon. What do you buy at Costco?  Share your favorites by leaving a reply below.

Livwell Products at Whole Foods

I shopped at Whole Foods earlier this week and was pleasantly surprised to find new Livwell gluten free baked goods, imported from the U.K.  The Seeded Sliced Sandwich Bread ($5.49) greatly exeeded my expectations with its wonderfully bready texture.  And it tastes great, too.  I am looking forward to trying the Crumpets ($4.99) stashed in my freezer.  Other items are available including white sandwich bread, pita bread, scones, english muffins, rolls, and pizza crusts.  According to the packaging they are made without gluten, wheat and milk and are vegetarian and a good source of fiber.  These products are shelved near the instore bakery at both the Cedar Center (frozen) and Woodmere (not frozen) stores.

guests to our website have reported that recalls of some Livwell products in the UK have been issued due to gluten contamination.

Updates will be issued as details are available.

Gluten Free Matzah

Here’s an interesting discussion of gluten free matzah.  The process of making matzah kosher for passover is quite complex.  And for making gluten free matzah even more. Kedem, a sponsor of the Celiac Disease Foundation, makes Yehuda Gluten Free Matzo Style Squares.   They also have a number of other products available. This year Kedem is excited to announce a great lineup of products (all gluten free) including a Toasted Onion flavor of last year’s huge hit Yehuda Gluten Free Matzo Style Squares, Yehuda Gluten Free Cake Meal, Jeff Nathan Creations All Natural Gluten Free Panko Flakes and Sweet Goodies Licorice!  Local stores may have a number of these and other gluten free items for passover.  But remember to read labels carefully as many passover items are made with wheat containing matzah, matzah meal, or matzah flour.

Passover – A Gluten Free Holiday

Spotted at Marc’s in Mayfield Heights: image The Jewish holiday of Passover begins the evening of Friday, April 6, 2012, and ends the evening of Saturday, April 14, 2012.  Observant Jews do not eat or possess chametz during the week of Passover. Chametz is wheat, spelt, barley, oats, and rye which has come into contact with water for more than 18 minutes.  Instead they eat matzoh, a flat unleavened cracker made from one of those grains, or products that have been made from matzoh (matzoh flour, or matzoh meal, or matzoh cake meal). So, why is this holiday different from all other holidays?  You may find stores stocked with special kosher for passover products. It is very important to read labels to make sure the product does not contain matzoh in any form.  Some products will be labeled “Non-Gebrokts” or “Gluten-Free”. Many manufacturers produce special products for people who follow the Non-Gebrokts Kosher for Passover diet, using specially cleaned or completely dedicated equipment and facilities. Ungar’s Kosher Bakery and Store in Cleveland Heights, (216) 321-7176, carries kosher for passover gluten free items all year long, with many more, including fresh baked items, for the holiday. Yehuda Matzo now has gluten free versions. Kedem products are a proud sponsor of the Celiac Disease Foundation.
