Next Door American Eatery has opened at Pinecrest.

Their menu has many items labeled GF = Gluten Free Friendly and GFO = Gluten Free Friendly Optional. There is a menu notation: “Please inform you server of any allergies. Our kitchen uses products that contain nuts and gluten”

Our friendly server was familiar with the menu but made several trips to the kitchen to consult with the chef to make sure that my food would be celiac safe. After the 1st consultation he informed me that I should not order anything fried – shared fryers. But a subsequent kitchen meeting brought the news that oil had been changed that day and (only) kale chips and falafel were ok.

We were nearing the end of happy hour, but were able to sneak in an order of falafel from the happy hour menu. I also enjoyed the Next Door Beet Burger on a gluten free bun (extra $1 and worth it). I’d order both again.

The sandwiches and burgers are served with “Chips & Simple Salad”. I was concerned when my meal was presented with the chips but was told by the server who brought it out that the chips were not made in house and were safe to eat. They were standard, but good, kettle chips. I added the salad of lightly dressed greens to my sandwich.

Gluten eating companions liked their Roasted Veggie Salad (though best ordered if you like beets – a lot) and Grilled Chicken sandwich.

The prices are reasonable and there are a number of interesting sounding gluten free items on the menu. But, as always, be sure to ask if those gluten free items are celiac safe.

  1. On a recent warm fall day I had another dinner at Next Door. The beet burger was still great. The server was well informed.. Also tried the smashed potatoes on the happy hour menu. Delicious.

  2. Had the guacamole on the happy hour menu. Note: the house made tortilla chips are NOT gluten free because they are made in a shared fryer. Sub the potato chips which come to the restaurant already prepared.
The happy hour menu has a number of gluten free choices.

  3. Stepped in at Next Door for a quick bite after taking a house guest for a tour of Pinecrest. Cute restaurant, friendly and super well informed staff regarding the menu and kitchen protocols! Great menu with lots of options but sad to have had to exclude the calamari appetizer and the chips and guacamole (both are listed as g-f but not cooked in a dedicated fryer) from my options.

Settled on the Pork and Green Chile soup which was delicious (order without the tortilla strips, again, due to the non-dedicated fryer). My guest enjoyed the tomato soup as well as the guacamole and chips (they were ordered before I took my seat, thoughtfully, for my benefit). As it happens the guac and chips serving was quite substantial and my guest was able to take the extra home with her. Both the app and the soup received a thumbs up for being perfectly prepared, served and tasty.

  4. Had another great meal at Next Door. Tried the Cuban Sandwich and the Roasted Veggie Bowl. Both so tasty. Got mixed message about fried food from the server. Was told both the chips and the fries are not made in house. Chips safe to eat by fries not. But all other fried food would be safe from a dedicated fryer. I suggest you pursue the topic if you plan to eat fried food at the restaurant.
